Fun Ren

He received his BFA in Oil Painting from Inner Mongolia University in 2010 and completed advanced studies at the Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University in 2014.

Fun Ren’s practice centers on the instability of images in a world shaped by repetition, mediation, and visual saturation. Working from fragments of everyday life, he constructs scenes that appear familiar at first glance, yet gradually lose coherence. Figures, objects, and environments are subtly displaced, interrupted, and reorganized, creating images that hover between recognition and estrangement.

Color in his work operates as a condition that restructures perception, flattening space, softening boundaries, and dissolving hierarchy. Depth recedes, narrative thins, and the image shifts from something to be entered into something that must be confronted as a surface. What remains is a controlled field in which differences persist but cannot fully assert themselves.

His works do not seek to represent reality. They expose how reality is processed, filtered, and reconstructed through contemporary visual systems. Memory, in this context, is no longer stable or continuous, but fragmented and reassembled. The result is a body of work that captures a pervasive condition of our time: a world in which images no longer clarify experience, but reorganize it.

Recent solo exhibitions include Low-Hanging Fruit (2025, Art Warehouse, Beijing), Beautiful World (2024, Hiart Space, Beijing), and Above Loneliness (2022, Cheng Contemporary Art Center, Beijing). His work has been included in numerous group exhibitions across China and internationally, including the Saint-Étienne International Design Biennale (France, 2019). In 2014, he was awarded the Bronze Prize at the China–Korea International Cultural Exchange Exhibition in Seoul.
