Jialin Wei

Her practice is shaped by contradiction. Alongside her foundation in Chinese painting, Wei trained through Western academic systems of anatomy and life drawing, and the resulting tension gives the work its charge: ritual meets body, ancient memory meets contemporary unease. Her figures are often androgynous, drawn from Plato’s myth of the original dual-sexed being and Rilke’s call to observe one person and another without prejudice. They refuse the assigned roles of mother, lover, son, or daughter, returning the encounter to its most elemental human terms.

Wei wants painting to do what religion once did. Not as doctrine, but as a vessel for reverence, mystery, and the invisible. She draws from Tarkovsky’s belief that art can be a form of prayer, seeking in her own work the coexistence of revelry and supplication. Her influences are wide and unconventional: Fellini, Leslie Cheung, Freddie Mercury, medieval religious painting, and modern dance. What connects them is transformation, theatrical presence, and the force of images that exceed explanation.

Wei’s work has been exhibited in major national and institutional contexts, including the 13th National Fine Arts Exhibition, the 14th Zhejiang Fine Arts Exhibition, the Shanghai New Jing’an Chinese Mythology Contemporary Art Exhibition, the Ambition Future Lab Education Expo, and “Eastern Wisdom: Chinese Traditional Culture Contemporary Art Exhibition.” Her work is held in the collections of Zhejiang Art Museum and Zhejiang Elite Art Museum, and has been shown at Shanghai Duolun Museum of Modern Art, West Bund Dome Art Center, Shandong Art Museum, Chengdu Art Museum, and Shanghai MOCA.
