At KB Fine Art, we recognize that the art industry has a significant environmental footprint, particularly through international shipping, travel, and exhibition logistics. We are committed to reducing our impact and fostering a sustainable future for the arts in the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond.
Our approach to sustainability is rooted in transparency, local action, and a goal of reducing the sector’s carbon emissions by at least 50% by 2030.
Our Commitment
We believe that art has the power to inspire change and reflect the world around us. Protecting that world is central to our mission. KB Fine Art is dedicated to:
- Reducing our Carbon Footprint: Actively monitoring and lowering emissions from gallery operations and logistics.
- Waste Reduction: Implementing "circular" practices in packing, exhibitions, and office management.
- Local Stewardship: Supporting environmental initiatives within our San Francisco and San Jose communities.
- Industry Collaboration: Working with artists, shippers, and fellow galleries to establish best practices for a greener art market.
Action Areas
To achieve our goals, we focus on four primary areas where the art industry has the greatest impact:
1. Shipping & Logistics
Shipping is the largest contributor to a gallery's carbon footprint. We strive to:
- Prioritize Sea and Road Freight: Whenever timelines permit, we encourage sea freight over air freight for international shipments and consolidated road transport for domestic deliveries.
- Eco-Friendly Packing: We prioritize the use of reusable crates (such as Rok-box or similar systems) and recyclable, plastic-free packing materials.
- Consolidated Transport: We work with logistics partners to group shipments, reducing the number of individual vehicle trips between our San Francisco and San Jose locations.
2. Energy & Operations
We are mindful of how we power our physical spaces:
- LED Lighting: Our gallery spaces in San Francisco and San Jose utilize energy-efficient LED lighting systems.
- Renewable Energy: We advocate for and utilize green energy programs through our local utility providers (such as PG&E’s Renewable Choice or CleanPowerSF).
- Digital First: We have transitioned to digital-only press kits, catalogs, and invoices to reduce paper waste.
3. Travel
While we value the importance of seeing art in person and participating in global art fairs, we are strategic about travel:
- Reduced Flights: We minimize business travel by utilizing local representatives for art fairs when possible and encouraging virtual viewing appointments.
- Public Transit: Our team utilizes the Bay Area’s public transit systems (BART, Caltrain, and VTA) for travel between gallery locations and client meetings whenever feasible.
4. Waste & Exhibitions
We aim to minimize the physical waste generated by exhibitions:
- Zero-Waste Events: We have eliminated single-use plastics at our opening receptions and events, opting for reusable or compostable alternatives.
- Reusable Exhibition Materials: We prioritize the reuse of gallery walls, pedestals, and display hardware across multiple exhibitions to reduce construction waste.
Artist Collaboration
We support artists who engage with environmental themes and sustainability in their practice. By providing a platform for these voices, we hope to encourage a broader dialogue within our community about the climate crisis and our collective responsibility.
Looking Forward
Sustainability is an ongoing journey. We are constantly reviewing our suppliers, materials, and methods to find better, greener ways to operate. We welcome feedback from our collectors and partners on how we can improve.
