About the work

In 1888, Van Gogh arrived in Arles, rented a small yellow house, and dreamed of creating a studio where artists could live and work together. He called it The Studio of the South.
He deeply admired Paul Gauguin and invited him to come. To welcome him, he painted sunflowers to fill the room prepared for Gauguin. “Gauguin will see that I’ve decorated the whole studio with nothing but sunflowers,” he wrote to his brother Theo. “It will be a kind of yellow symphony.”
After Gauguin arrived, two tempers met like flint. Van Gogh painted by impulse and faith; Gauguin by design and control. Their ideals cracked under the strain of difference, and within weeks the friendship fell apart.
In this painting, the cracks across Van Gogh’s face echo the fracture. It is the mark left when connection fails. Yet in ruin, the sunflower endures.
The story of Friendship speaks to the yearning for connection, the fragility of idealism, and the persistence of art after companionship collapses. Through that enduring bloom, Van Gogh reminds us that what is broken can still give light through the cracks.
