About the work
Inflatable Faith takes the form of a church, complete with a cross and pointed towers, but its pink walls appear to be filled with air. It has the shape of something built to last, and the fragile substance of something that survives because we keep believing it will.
We know this feeling outside the painting. A family expectation, a measure of success, or a belief shared by everyone around us can become so familiar that we stop asking where it came from. We make decisions around it. We pass it on. Eventually, questioning it can feel more frightening than living with the doubt, because the answer might change our place among the people we love.
The church still stands. The painting leaves us with the uneasy thought that our participation may be part of what keeps it standing.
