Wuang

Wuang is a Chinese contemporary artist and writer whose practice moves between painting, literature, and spiritual introspection. She graduated from Fudan University and the Institute of Literature at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, and worked as an investigative journalist for Life Week. Since 2003, she has published professionally across literature and journalism, with more than twenty publications to her name.

In 2021, Wuang formally entered the field of visual art, working primarily in oil painting and tempera. She held her first solo exhibition in Beijing in 2023. Her paintings are rooted in the atmosphere of pre-oil painting portraiture, drawing from religious imagery, devotional stillness, and the psychological intensity of early sacred art. Yet rather than recreating historical forms, Wuang turns them inward, using portraiture as a site of restraint, tension, and private revelation.
Her figures often appear suspended between serenity and distortion, silence and confession. Through controlled compositions, muted emotion, and an almost liturgical sense of presence, Wu constructs portraits that feel both intimate and distant. Her work carries the discipline of a writer and the sensitivity of a painter: each image unfolds less as a narrative than as a complex inner monologue, where beauty, solitude, faith, and unease quietly coexist.
