Mayfly
2026
Oil on canvas
40 × 40 cm / 15.7 × 15.7 in
About the work
Dusk, mayflies, and children all symbolize how fleeting time can feel. The mayfly has long been used by writers as a symbol of a short life, since it hatches in the morning and dies at night.
We often sigh over how quickly time disappears, but we forget that every brief moment of brilliance is supported by a long, unseen process. A child gathers strength while growing. Dusk, before fading, softens the sky with its most tender colors. The mayfly, in its short life, fulfills its purpose with grace.
A short life is not a tragedy. It is what makes each moment precious. Like the mayfly in this painting, resting on a rooftop at dusk, it knows its time is limited. Still, it stretches its translucent wings and leaves its own small mark on the world.
