About the work
At Eternity’s Gate enters into dialogue with Van Gogh's image of human despair, reimagining the seated figure as a contemporary body caught between psychic collapse and eruption. Where Van Gogh's Sorrowing Old Man folds forward into his hands, this figure leans backward with eyes closed and mouth open, as though the body has become the final threshold between endurance and surrender.
The room is still, but nothing within it feels settled. On the table, a wine glass releases octopus-like tentacles, transforming a fragile promise of relief into a force of invasion. The glass suggests the impulse to drink the problems away, to soften pain, numb thought, and briefly escape the pressure of being conscious. Yet what was meant to soothe begins to spread. The tentacles represent intrusive thoughts, unresolved memories, addiction, anxiety, and the knots of emotion that refuse to stay contained.
Beyond the window, a volcano rises at the edge of eruption. It becomes a symbol of pressure that has built for too long: buried trauma, suppressed anger, accumulated fear, and the external crises that press against the self. The volcano's shape nearly connects with the figure's body, as if the disaster beyond the window is also happening within him.
With its cold realist palette, raw brushwork, and surreal symbolism, the painting gives visible form to modern spiritual exhaustion. It stages the moment when the self sits alone before an invisible gate, surrounded by everything it has tried to silence. Here, eternity is not presented as peace or release, but as the moment when the inner life can no longer be suppressed, when pain, memory, and crisis rise to the surface and demand to be seen.
In this confrontation, the painting offers a difficult lesson: to survive fear, one must first learn how to face it.
