About the work
Tianhao replaces the hands of a wooden clock with an open pair of scissors. Their blades point to 10:04, the moment lightning strikes the clock tower in Back to the Future and powers Marty’s return from 1955 to 1985. The Roman numerals still mark the hours, but the scissors suggest a clock capable of changing the course it measures.
The work recalls the temptation to revisit an earlier season of life and see how things might have unfolded differently. With distance, we come to understand how each season has shaped us, including those we could make little sense of while living through them.
Perhaps the scissors cut through the wish to rearrange what has already happened. Every hour has brought us to this one; there is no other timeline we need to catch up to.
