About the work
The painting asks how hope for peace can survive the devastation of war. Bertrand Russell’s face appears in the upper right, overlooking a burning landscape. His presence brings his opposition to war into the scene, inviting us to consider the human cost of the destruction below. Broken buildings fill the foreground, while a distant skyline remains standing, suggesting that a future is still possible.
At the center, enormous flowers rise through the ruins. Their red and yellow petals echo the surrounding flames, making growth and destruction difficult to separate. This visual tension gives the painting its force: life persists within a world that is still burning. The flowers express the hope that even after profound suffering, life can begin again, and peace can take root.
