Vulnerability

This oil painting captures, through a composition charged with tension, one of the most ordinary and vulnerable moments of contemporary life: the girl curled up on a bed, scrolling on her phone.

The work adopts an unconventional side-rear perspective, deliberately withholding the figure’s face so the phone becomes the visual center. Its pale green back and twin camera lenses function as the recognizable mark of a smartphone and a pair of hollow eyes, completing the metaphor of being consumed by the screen.

The figure rests in a posture that is at once relaxed and folded inward, nestled in disheveled bedding. A warm brown blanket lies casually across the waist and hips, while off-white socks accentuate the legs’ fullness and muscular contours. In the most immediate way, it evokes the emotional atmosphere of our time: the digital cocoon, mental exhaustion, and contemporary loneliness. It needs no explanation to carry force.

The painting does not beautify its subject. Instead, through a coarse, tactile realism, it strikes directly at the contemporary condition: within a private space, the body is relaxed, but the mind remains tightly tethered to the screen.

In that familiar image, we caught sight of ourselves at our most vulnerable, without knowing.
