The Sun We Make

Most of us know what it feels like to wait for something outside ourselves to change: for better circumstances, for another person to meet us halfway, or simply for a difficult period to pass.

Tianhao remembers being a child, standing in a dark room with a flashlight and imagining the circle of light on the wall as his own sun. Outside, night had already fallen; with the small source of light in his hand, he could make a sun appear.

In The Sun We Make, that childhood gesture becomes the central idea of the painting. The sun above belongs to the world outside us: the light offered by circumstance, opportunity, love, recognition, or fortune. But those sources are never guaranteed. There are moments when the landscape around us remains dark, and waiting for it to brighten is not enough.

The light rising from the water proposes another possibility. Instead of searching only for a source of light outside ourselves, we can begin with whatever remains in our own hands and turn it into a source of light. A decision, an act of courage, a piece of work, a conviction, a gesture of care, even the smallest reason to continue can become the beginning of that light. The sun we make does not replace the one in the sky. It is the light we generate from within when the light beyond us cannot be reached.
