The Human Condition V

This surreal, absurdist painting uses the image of a mother cow transformed into a glass vessel to examine social alienation and the illusions that shape our understanding of human relationships.

The cow has been stripped of her living body and autonomous self. What remains is a transparent container defined by a single function: to store milk and continuously provide nourishment. Her transformation reflects the condition of individuals reduced to a single social role or measure of value, expected to supply care, labor, emotional support, or material resources without limit. The giver is no longer recognized as a complete being, but treated as an instrument for satisfying the needs of others.

Beside her, the calf acts instinctively. It presses against the transparent body and drinks with complete trust, believing the familiar form before it to be a mother capable of permanent protection. Yet the calf cannot perceive that this maternal shell contains neither living warmth nor emotional presence. Its sense of security rests upon appearance rather than reality.

The painting stages two forms of captivity that viewers may recognize within their own relationships. We may see ourselves in the mother, valued primarily for what we provide and gradually emptied by the expectation that we remain endlessly available. Yet we may also recognize ourselves in the calf, reaching instinctively toward a familiar source of comfort without considering whether the person before us still has the emotional capacity to give.

Neither figure is presented simply as victim or offender. One has learned to confuse love with self-erasure, while the other has learned to confuse dependence with intimacy. Together, they form a closed cycle in which giving becomes compulsory and receiving becomes unconscious.

The work therefore turns its question toward us: do we truly encounter the people we love as complete human beings, or only through the roles they perform in our lives? By exposing the distance between nourishment and affection, usefulness and emotional presence, the painting invites viewers to reconsider where they may be overgiving, overdependent, or mistaking familiarity for genuine connection.
