About the work
In Reins, the apparatus of control persists in the absence of its agent. A white horse stands saddled and bridled among the stark verticals of a winter forest, every element signaling readiness for a rider who is not there and, the painting insists, may never arrive.
The trees repeat with an architectural regularity that suggests a system, columns in an order whose purpose has outlasted its occupant. It is the reins themselves that emerge as the work's true subject: as figures for authority without agency, command without a commanding hand.
The painting refuses narrative. What remains is more destabilizing: the recognition that the mechanisms of control can survive entirely intact long after the will behind them has withdrawn. Reins do not depict freedom. It depicts the uncanny persistence of order in an uninhabited world.
