About the work
Camus once said that life feels absurd because people search for meaning in a world that has none to give. In this painting, a blind man uses a bat to find his way. It is a strange and playful act: if the world itself makes no sense, why not face it with an equally absurd gesture?
Camus compared this to the myth of Sisyphus, condemned to push a stone up a mountain forever. The struggle itself, he argued, can be enough to make life complete. The blind man with the bat is like Sisyphus: the act may look meaningless, but in doing it, he turns resistance into a kind of triumph.
Here, the bat becomes a symbol. It sees in the dark in ways humans cannot, and it is often treated as a mysterious outsider. The blind man stands for all of us, limited in what we think we know. The night and the rigid shapes of buildings suggest a cold, ordered world. Against this backdrop, the image of "bat navigation" feels poetic, rebellious, and freeing.
Philosopher Heidegger wrote that although we are "thrown” into a world we did not choose, we can still make it our own through art of living. In this sense, the blind man and his bat show how even in a constrained world, imagination can open new paths of perception and possibilities.
