Leda and the Swan

This painting reimagines the ancient myth of Leda and the Swan. In the original story, Zeus disguises himself as a swan and enters Leda's life through deception and overwhelming divine power. Their encounter results in the birth of extraordinary children, including Helen of Troy in many versions of the myth, linking Leda’s private experience to a chain of events that culminates in war. The story therefore presents the swan as an external force that descends upon a woman and alters her fate, leaving her to bear consequences larger than herself.

Here, however, the god has vanished. The swan's head has been replaced by a glowing light bulb, transforming the creature from an agent of external power into an image of consciousness emerging from within. The swan retains its associations with instinct and the unconscious, while the bulb suggests the fragile illumination of self-awareness. What was once a disguise concealing intention now becomes a source of revelation.

The woman is therefore not awaiting the surrendering to a destiny imposed upon her. She is confronting the hidden emotions and psychic forces produced by her own interior world. The encounter is a solitary act of introspection. At dusk, she meets the unfamiliar parts of herself in silence.

The painting reflects a modern spiritual condition: revelation begins inwardly, through the difficult recognition of what already lives within us. The glowing bulb evokes the moment when an unrecognized truth of life suddenly enters consciousness. Its modest light suggests that self-knowledge begins as a fragile glimmer within the unconscious, just bright enough to help us see ourselves differently.
