Becoming IV

Most of us have experienced the strange moment of leaving something familiar, only to look back and remember its warmth.

The two figures in Tianhao’s painting represent two states of the same self. One remains inside the glowing tent, drawn toward comfort, protection, and the life it already understands. The other has stepped into the open landscape, choosing uncertainty in order to discover who they might become.

The tent's translucent walls suggest an identity beginning to dissolve into its surroundings. Inside, the figure is protected, yet almost invisible. Outside, the figure appears darker but more clearly defined. They may still feel unfinished, but they are beginning to take shape and establish a presence of their own.

Beyond them, the green landscape opens into an enormous unknown. It carries the promise of growth and freedom, but offers no clear path forward. Fireworks bloom in the distance, representing the unexpected beauty and fleeting gifts life can offer. The future has already begun to illuminate the sky, yet emotionally, the figure is not quite ready to turn toward it.

This is the liminal space between leaving and becoming. We may walk away from a relationship, a home, a belief, or an earlier version of ourselves because we know we have outgrown it. Still, distance can make the past appear softer than it once felt. We remember its warmth before we remember its limitations.

The painting suggests that growth comes through reconciling these two selves: the one that longs to retreat and the one that is ready to move forward. We can carry an inner place of refuge without returning to the life we chose to leave.

The figure has stepped outside. The landscape is vast. And somewhere beyond their hesitation, the fireworks have already begun to celebrate their becoming.
