About the work
Created over more than 250 hours, this work honors braiding as an act of love, patience, and cultural preservation. In many African homes, braiding is a ritual through which mothers teach their daughters pride, identity, and belonging, a prayer passed from one hand to another.
The mother and daughter are rendered in black and white, while their clothing remains vivid. The blue-and-yellow Ankara fabric and the daughter's red dress become declarations of pride, suggesting that culture endures as generations change.
At its heart, the work captures the intimacy between a mother and child, a love formed strand by strand. It presents the mother as her daughter's first keeper of heritage, passing history forward through the gesture of her hands.
